What does "On Hold" mean in the ATA Carnet System?

Modified on Fri, 9 Oct at 12:01 PM

A Customs officer may place a carnet transaction on hold when additional checks, inspections or administrative procedures are required.

When a carnet is placed on hold, further transactions in the same customs territory are blocked until the hold is released.

The hold function replaces the traditional paper procedure where Customs could physically retain the carnet while checks were being performed.

Can the hold be removed?

Yes.

The Customs office that placed the hold may later release it through the ATA Carnet System, allowing the carnet to continue its normal lifecycle.

Do I need a new QR code after a hold is released?

No.

Once the hold is released, Customs can continue processing without requiring the holder to prepare a new travel or obtain a new QR code.
