Can Customs still process transactions after my ATA Carnet has expired?

Modified on Fri, 9 Oct at 12:38 PM

In some cases, yes.

Although an ATA Carnet has reached its expiry date, certain transactions may still need to be completed in order to properly close movements that took place while the carnet was valid.

Which transactions are no longer permitted after expiry?

Once the carnet has expired, the following transactions can no longer be initiated:

  • Validation
  • Importation
  • Exportation
  • Transit Opening

Which transactions may still be completed after expiry?

The following transactions may still be processed after expiry when they are required to complete an existing movement:

  • Re-exportation
  • Re-importation
  • Transit Closure

Why are some transactions still allowed?

These transactions may be required to provide evidence that goods were re-exported, re-imported or that a transit operation was properly closed.

Allowing these final steps helps complete the customs history of the goods and the carnet.

My carnet has expired and the goods are still abroad. What should I do?

Contact:

  • the relevant Customs authorities; and
  • your Issuing Association

as soon as possible.

Depending on the circumstances, additional procedures may be required. The ATA Carnet System cannot determine what actions may be required under national customs rules. This remains a matter for Customs and the Issuing Association.
